Moms make eco-friendly kids wear

ALL parents want to give their little ones the best possible things in life, be it clothes, accessories, toys, furniture, books or anything else. With more kids boutiques opening, parents now have plenty of models, colors, and patterns to select from, and good-quality well-designed, naturally produced fabrics are their top priority.

Eco-friendly kids wear is a real buzz word at the moment with growing awareness about ecological sustainability and safety. Mamas want organic, chemical-free fabrics next to their children's delicate skin.

A baby's skin is five times thinner than that of an adult, making it far easier for dangerous and harmful toxins to enter their bodies. Even fabric adults think is safe can be hiding some nasties for babies and children. So organic kids clothing, free of toxic residue, can make cute kids more comfortable.

Shanghai moms who saw a need have opened a number of shops offering togs that are safe, stylish and comfortable and let consumers feel they are doing some good for the environment.

This week we highlight three shops specializing in eco-friendly kids clothes and accessories that are durable and well-designed, with high-quality workmanship in sewing and details.

What nicer way to swaddle your newborn than in a wonderfully soft brushed organic cotton blanket and dress your toddler in eco-friendly, natural apparel? Karen Spencer -- US style boutique

In 2004 Karen Spencer landed in Shanghai from the United States to make her first home in Asia. With a two-year-old in tow and another baby on the way, she searched the local market for beautiful, well-made children's clothes and was surprised at the lack of desirable products. Since then, she sought out good fabrics and then designed clothes that were custom-made into T-shirts, sweaters and pants for her boys. Her collection was a great success in the US and now she sells her American-style clothing line for children from newborns through six years old at her boutique Karen Spencer on Taikang Road. All the adorable children's pieces are 100 percent cotton and linen. The shoes are 100 percent leather and baby hand knit clothes are organic cotton as are "dumpling shoes." Prices range from 100 yuan (US$14.91) to 600 yuan.

Opening hours: 10am-6:30pm

Address: No. 5, Lane 248, Taikang Rd

Tel: 135-2425-4944Lollipop -- Togs and play area

Wendy Krueger took over Lollipop after former owner Grace Chesse left town, and she brought in her experience in fashion, marketing, management and mothering. She added some new brands.

Lollipop is a calm, relaxed and well-designed shop selling a plethora of eco baby products, toys and clothing. It provides an enjoyable shopping experience -- a kids play area, diaper changing station, breastfeeding corner and Nespresso coffee. Expat customers can find an extensive collection of Western brands that they've grown to love, and knowledgeable staff helping select certified, safe products for newborns and toddlers. The products include certified non-toxic Miyim toys, Australian wooden toys Anamalz, Biodegradable wet wipes, O Organics baby food from the US, Weleda bath products, Only Natural soaps and oils, Dwell Studio organic hooded towels as well as Wobabybasics and ecoBibi.

Nest -- Artists' and design hub

"Design with a conscience" is the concept behind this 100-square-meter loft retail destination hidden in a factory above the busy lanes of Tianzifang. The first kids clothing line joining Nest was Wobabybasics, started by mom and entrepreneur Sherry Poon. She got the idea for Wobabybasics while searching for organic clothes for her new-born daughter. After an extensive search showed limited available products, she decided to start her own business selling 100 percent organic cotton children's basics. The idea was to make layette baby items that are comfortable, low-maintenance, durable, functional and attractive to reduce consumer consumption. After Poon, Brigitte Elie, also a long-term Shanghai resident and a mom, designs and sells her ecoBibi products (practical baby, mother and lifestyle accessories) at Nest. Elie has always been passionate about environmentally friendly practices and products, and the lack of well designed green products in the city led her to design her own. Her designs use a combination of sustainable fabrics such as bamboo textile, organic cotton, wool and hemp. Bamboo fabric is 60 percent more absorbent than cotton and has antibacterial properties. Her new baby collections include changing mats, bath towels, bibs and burp cloths and mothers' breast pads and nursing covers, with prices from 35 yuan to 285 yuan.
