More to this street than food

COMMONLY known for its wide selection of restaurants, Wujiang Road is a popular destination for hungry shoppers after a long day spent on the famous Nanjing Road W. Tucked away between two busy shopping centers and with easy access to the Metro, it would take effort to miss this happening street in the heart of downtown Shanghai.

A few years ago, it was typically referred to as a food street, with local eateries, market stalls and delicious street snacks. Since the World Expo, it has received a commercial facelift, with a more sophisticated edge. Western-style bakeries, coffee shops and clothing outlets abound, and despite the fact that it is known best for its restaurants, there are several other reasons why this street should be your next destination. This week we uncovered a few gems in the area not readily visible from passing outside.

Pho Sizzling

To satisfy your craving for Vietnamese cuisine, stop by Pho Sizzling, a chain restaurant relatively new on the scene but extremely popular with hungry 9-to-5ers during lunch hours. While the pho is lackluster, the Vietnamese sandwiches and vermicelli noodle dishes are delightful. Prices are very reasonable, with main dishes ranging between 30 and 40 yuan (US$4.59-6.12). The ambience will entice wanderlust in some patrons as it is adorned with photos of Vietnam's beautiful geographical wonders and vintage adverts giving the place a nostalgic hint.
