Nanchang newcomers

TREE-LINED Nanchang Road is famous for its old European-styled residences that are home to an increasing number of interesting boutiques, restaurants and cafes. After two years, we revisited the road to check out the changes, starting at the intersection with Maoming Road S. and going all the way to Ruijin Road No. 2. Shops have opened and closed, reflecting the fast pace of change in the city. New fashion and lifestyle boutiques and an appealing cafe opened recently, making for an entertaining Sunday stroll.

Loushi Design Space

The concept behind Loushi Design Space, where design showroom and cafe merge, is "combining coffee with life." The renovated loft-type space is furnished with eclectic style, including Art Deco items from 1930s Shanghai, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. Loushi also displays original furniture from designer Lily Chen as well as several stylish bags priced from 1,000 (US$157) to 2,000 yuan. The venue is a design platform where designers of all kinds can share their work. Regular parties are held, usually on Sundays, and conversation is encouraged in both Chinese and English. The menu features many kinds of coffee as well as Italian wines and a selection of cocktails, all priced between 20 and 40 yuan. While the food menu is not extensive, it does provide an interesting mix of Chinese and European cuisines, as well as impressive desserts. Set business meals range from 50 to 80 yuan and include soup and a beverage.

Tips

In an attractive building set slightly back from the road, Tips is an unusual and funky addition to high-end boutiques on the road. Opened in April, it features a large array of colorful and diverse clothing from several up-and-coming designers, mostly from Europe. They include Mary Katrantzou and Barbara I Gongini, whose collection is for both men and women. T-shirts range between 2,000 and 3,000 yuan and coats are around 5,000 yuan; a leather coat can cost 10,000 yuan. Long and stylish leather gloves are priced at 4,000 yuan and other accessories such as sunglasses and jewelry are priced at between 1,500 and 5,000 yuan. The boutique is constantly evolving; it features around six designers today but aims to showcase 13 by 2012. The back section is a studio where new designers showcase their work.

Currently on display are the futuristic-meets-superhero designs of Ground Zero. Their theme is "women power" and they are definitely head turners. The studio space regularly rotates designers and encourages more unusual fashion tastes.

Ting

Ting's simple design is an effective way to showcase furniture, ceramics and artwork. The furniture is Art Deco in style and many pieces are authentic; some have been reupholstered in plush, richly colored fabrics. One chair costs around 6,000 yuan and an upper-range sofa costs 25,000 yuan. Several traditional wood screens frame colored glasswork. Ting displays oil paintings as well as painted glass bottles and jars by British artist Chris Gill. Painted glass items are funky and depict Shanghai images; they range in price from 400 to 1,200 yuan. Unusual designs by Beijing ceramics artist Ling Jing include a vase that looks like a pair of legs and a candle holder that appears to be dripping wax. Ting offers a small selection of women's clothing by designers Antik Batik and Henrik Vibskov, ranging in price from 1,000 to 4,000 yuan.
