Soak up Yanqing Road's quiet
SITUATED just behind the high-profile Huaihai Road M., Yanqing Road is not often visited and is definitely not a typical destination for tourists to Shanghai. But if you enjoy exploring the old world charm of the city, this road should be on your list. The walk has its attractions in the beautiful autumn days while you imagine yourself strolling in the quiet lanes of the past. Compared to neighboring streets, Yanqing Road becomes extremely quiet and engaging as you leave behind the clamor and commotion of noisier areas. Take time to slowly wander through the 1920s-30s villas and longtangs. Although the street is mainly a residential area, you can still discover many treasures in little shops selling exotic carpets, European pipes and Chinese antiques.
Carpetstan's rugs and textiles
The smell of wool and the vibrant colors hit the senses simultaneously as you step into Carpetstan. Every space in the little shop is filled with layers of beautifully patterned rugs and carpets with new stock coming in regularly. The extensive range of colors and threads from Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran make it hard to choose a carpet, with the designs on each one telling a different story. The shop has only been running for one year but is already popular with foreign customers and plans for another outlet are underway. As well as the decorative mats, the shop also sells beautiful baskets made out of date leaves. Covered in vibrant patterns they offer a creative way to store items. They can even be tacked on the wall in groups for decoration. The carpets range in price from 500 yuan (US$73.24) to 30,000 yuan and the baskets make an affordable accessory at only 60 yuan.

Oriental Red Antique
Even in an emerging, ever-changing, modern city like Shanghai, people still love to have antiques. The small shop tucked away on Yanqing Road is jam packed with old treasures, pieces from before the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and some dating back at least 100 years. From coins, to medals, sewing machines to record players and countless late Chairman Mao Zedong replicas, the shop is a collector's dream. If it doesn't have the particular piece you're after, the staff can help you track it down in another store. Prices are negotiable and can range from 100 yuan to 1,000 yuan.

Baroque beauty
This Baroque-style garden residence built in 1923 is the most stunning building along the road. It places emphasis on symmetry, proportion and geometry. It is extravagant, seeking to flaunt wealth and astonish the viewer. The decorative carvings are intricate and rich with carved geometric designs, floral motifs, and stone pots, characteristic of the Baroque style. It is said the original owner was a British Jewish merchant who became extremely wealthy in Shanghai and built this luxurious residence in a quiet location at the intersection of Yanqing and Huating roads. The building is now used by Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital.
