Walk into a wonderland
WALKING down Shaanxi Road N. brings back memories of little bits of Shanghai past - the small alleys and archways leading to residential houses better known as the longtangs (lanes), European-influenced architecture and children in school uniform talking excitedly to one another while eating roadside snacks.
Yet with the recent emergence of cafes, bars and stores, this section of the street has become a fine balance of the old and the new. In this week's edition of City Scene we take you down this road filled with old memories and usher in some of the more recent additions.
Area LivingArea Living, one of the most talked-about retail showrooms for designer furniture in the city, is located at the intersection of Shaanxi Road and Xinzha Road. The showroom's interior measures roughly 2,700 square meters and features high ceilings, vintage windows and historical elements from when the building served as a tool factory in the 1970s. Three partners - a Taiwanese, a Shanghainese and a Peruvian - are always on the lookout for companies and brands that share their love and passion for quality designs that will provide Area Living with the spark of inspiration. They currently feature designer furniture and household items from more than 50 renowned brands including Andre Putman, Antonio Citterio, the Buralic Brothers, Eileen Gray, Jasper Morrison, Philippe Stark, Tom Dixon - the list goes on and on. Area Living's goal is to carry the best in design and quality for anything to do with home decor and furnishing. Prices range from a few hundred for accessories to more than 30,000 yuan (US$4,632) for limited-edition furniture, and for those with big cash to splash, a modern art piece worth a cool million.

Tel: 6255-3218Egghead BagelsConceptualized and executed by four long-time friends from the United States, Egghead Bagels is the closest you can get to an authentic New York-style bagel breakfast here in Shanghai. Small and cozy, the interior is modeled after a typical American diner complete with the plush chairs and bright, glossy furniture. Bagels here are slightly pricy with Bagelwiches (a combination of a bagel and a sandwich) from 50 to 65 yuan, but plain bagels or bagels with butter or cream cheese are available from 10 yuan. Henry Chang, a founding partner, explains that Egghead Bagels was set up for the purpose of giving people a simple American breakfast of bagels and an alternative choice for breakfast delivery healthier than any fast food chain. Try their all-day breakfast set as well as the famous Lox Bagelwich (60 yuan), their smoked salmon option popular with both locals and expatriates. Subs, pastas and pizzas are also served.Opening hours: 7:30am-9pm (weekdays); 8:30am-9pm (weekends)

Tel: 5213-5601The Rabbit HoleYour journey into Alice's wonderland begins with the strange doors leading into The Rabbit Hole. The dark themes in this lounge bar are embodied by the clever use of lighting and the blood red chairs you are invited to sit on. Being a lounge there is a house DJ playing on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. A dinner menu - which comes in the form of a giant playing card - is available with appetizers starting from 40 yuan to the main salmon dish costing 168 yuan. Sticking to the "Alice in Wonderland" theme there is rabbit stew (108 yuan) but rest assured it doesn't contain a gold wristwatch. Alcoholic drinks are reasonably priced with house wines from 35 to 45 yuan, as well as signature cocktails from 70 to 80 yuan. Named after Lewis Carroll's well-loved characters, the cocktails include Alice, The Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit and The Cheshire Cat. A special lunch menu launches at the end of the month. Must tries are the pizzas, beef steak and signature cocktails.
