Valentine’s Day coincided with this year’s Chinese Lantern Festival. As was anticipated, film fans flocked to Shanghai cinemas on the special day. A single day box-office record of 215 million yuan (US$35.40m) was made in Shanghai on February 14.
Chinese romances such as “Beijing Love Story” created headlines in the local film market between February 10 and 16. It earned about 20 million yuan on the afternoon before Valentine’s Day, setting a mainland record for 2D films in a single day.
Imported foreign films like “Frozen” also did well, attracting many movie fans with its creative story and artistic cinematography.
The top five movies at Shanghai theaters from February 10-16, followed by gross earnings, number of screens and number of days in release, as compiled by Shanghai United Circuit, are:
“Beijing Love Story”

Days in release: 7
The film follows four different relationships, highlighting each couple’s happiness and problems.
“The Monkey King”

“Frozen”

The animated fantasy film, loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.
