Chinese films in the spotlight

EACH year, the Shanghai International Film Festival recognizes the achievements of Chinese filmmakers, actors and their productions. This year the festival is recognizing the following films.

"White Vengeance" (2011) is set at the end of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) when China is in a state of political turmoil. The two most powerful rebels and good friends, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, find themselves battling each other for supremacy. Unbeknownst to the duo, their rivalry was a set up by the former Qin Emperor Chu, who secretly hopes to reclaim sovereignty over China after defeating the weakened Xiang and Liu. Realizing Chu's plans, Xiang and Liu join forces to defeat Chu. The duo becomes brothers when Xiang saves Liu's life during a battle against Chu. But Xiang becomes jealous of Liu's military prowess and doubtful of Liu's loyalty. Xiang then invites Liu to a lavish banquet, where he attempts to assassinate Liu.

"Flying Sword of Dragon Gate" (2011) tells the tale of the Dragon Inn and its many mysteries: the fire that burned it down three years ago, the former innkeeper Jade who went missing, and the hidden treasure and the sandstorms that come once every 60 years to reveal where the treasure can be found. In a time of great political corruption, the righteous warrior Zhao tracks down the evil assassin Yu and his men to the inn. Meanwhile a runaway imperial concubine takes refuge in the same inn with a mysterious woman named Ling. When a once-in-sixty-years sandstorm is about to hit the Dragon Inn, Zhao decides to duel Yu.
