Stars shine on the red carpet
THE curtain raised on the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival last night with a grand opening ceremony.
More than 400 international and local film celebrities walked down the red carpet outside the Shanghai Grand Theater. Among them were Hollywood actor Aaron Eckhart, Dutch actress Famke Janssen, South Korean heartthrob Ahn Chil-Hyun, Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat, Taiwan model-turned-actress Lin Chi-ling and mainland actress Zhang Ziyi and Zhang Yuqi.
Hollywood star Eckhart received a warm welcome from local fans, earning extra points for saying "hello" to Shanghai fans in the city dialect.
"It is my second time in Shanghai," he said. "In 2010, I enjoyed my visit to the World Expo. I'm very excited and happy to attend this beautiful film festival."
The event also attracted Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, who is here to promote his new spy thriller "Wind Seeker."
During the opening ceremony, Hollywood film producer Mike Medavoy, who was born in Shanghai, received the Outstanding Film Achievement Award.
Medavoy said that Shanghai had provided a haven for Jewish people like his family who had faced persecution.
"My father told me that this is the place that saved our lives," he said.
Celebrated Chinese film director Wu Yigong, earned the Lifetime Chinese Film Achievement Award.
"Film is like a dream," Wu said. "It is accessible to everyone."
Outstanding Chinese Film Achievement Award went to Chow Yun-fat, who has starred in more than 70 films.
This year's jury panel for the Golden Goblet award is chaired by French director Jean Jacques Annaud.
"Shanghai is an amazing place," Annaud said. "It is my first visit here. There are lots of exciting things to explore in this city."
Chinese supernatural fantasy film "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" was the festival's opening film.
