Charming hotel in heart of Lisbon
ONE of Lisbon’s most treasured buildings, in one of the city’s most emblematic squares, is reborn as a cool boutique hotel: AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado.
Every corner of the property tells a story of Lisbon, from the Age of Discovery until today, and will add charm to any visit to the city.
“Aiming to create the perfect balance between a chic, urban atmosphere while paying homage to the ancient history of the building in which the hotel is set, Almalusa Baixa/Chiado is the result of a concerted effort from several partners, which have all made sure this building’s rich past has been respected and incorporated into the hotel’s design. Many rooms boast unique features such as traditional Portuguese tiles or original fireplaces,” said hotel CEO Miguel Simões de Almeida, who was the mentor of the overall design.
“The interior design became a natural consequence of the incredible history of the building — over the years, it played host to a bank, a tile factory, a wine merchant and a very prosperous family, among other incarnations — and its prime location in Parca do Municipio,” he added.
“Every decision was taken while thinking of a way to enhance the incredible setting at our disposal. As a result, the choice of natural, understated yet luxurious materials, lighting and furnishings perfectly complements the surroundings, creating an intimate, welcoming ambiance.”
The ground floor is a genuine restoration of the oldest part of the building with a small retail area, lobby and the Delfina restaurant. “It was a very natural and organic process,” Almeida said. “By renovating the building and finding all of these very interesting materials from the past, such as the entrance stone pavement and the old tiles, it was very easy to get inspired and find the perfect ‘modern’ counterpart in the choices of interior design, furniture disposition and lighting. The main objective was to enhance the past, respect it, and still create a modern, urban feel.”
Older elements are harmoniously mixed with locally made modern furniture and textiles. You can immerse yourself in Portuguese culture through the hotel’s amenities and souvenirs.
The hotel boasts 28 chic rooms, including 12 suites. All rooms feature a contemporary stamp of Portuguese aristocratic style that is individually designed. They feature a wide range of natural colors such as white, cream, tan and wooden shades.
“We wanted to give a timeless feel to the overall hotel, an informal and very comfortable setting where guests can relax and forget about what is happening outside,” Almeida said. “It was a bold, risky move to open a new boutique hotel in Lisbon in such turbulent financial times, but the incredible reception we have received so far keeps us motivated and proves we have made the right choices.”
AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado is located close to historical monuments, museums, exclusive boutiques, world-class restaurants and bars.
