Design brand founder says colors next trend

Who is he?

Deng Bingbing is the founder of two iconic and award-winning Chinese design brands: homeware brand Pilingpalang and design studio Bing Design. Born into an artistic family in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, Deng was learning art by the age of four, and went on to study at the Tianjin Arts and Crafts Vocational College. He then spent a decade in Melbourne, Australia working as a graphic designer for advertising and fashion labels. Bing Design was founded upon his return to China in 2001 and Pilingpalang in 2009.

Tell us some of your works and name the one you are most proud of.

Most of my works are logo designs and packaging designs. I won a few design awards in two-dimension design. Since 2010, I have moved from two-dimension to three-dimension, creating Pilingpalang. It’s a home decoration brand with a three-product range: ceramic, cloisonné and lacquer, which has given me a new view of design and life. I won ADIDA best tableware design for 2011 so I have to say creating Pilingpalang is one of the things I am most I proud of.

Are you currently involved with any project?

We are actually working with Disney to create a line of ceramic and cloisonné for Mickey’s 90th birthday anniversary. It’s the first time Disney gives license to a homeware brand, and Mickey will for the first time appear on beautiful ancient-technique cloisonné. They will look very Modern China.

Describe your design style?

Color, color, and more color. Different color combinations make my works very Bing and very Pilingpalang. I also love to create amazing visuals by using patterns, drawings and images.

Where are you most creative?

There’s no certain place where I can be creative; my creativity comes from everywhere. Sometimes at home, sometimes at a gallery or cinema, sometimes when I’m traveling or when I’m dreaming.

What does your home mean to you?

Same as everyone, where you can sit down and take your shoes off, relax and enjoy.

What do you collect?

Antiques and retro objects.

Where would you like to go most in shanghai?

Former French concession, M50, the Bund, Luxun Park and 1933 Shanghai.

What will be the next big design trend?

Colors, like Pilingpalang. I’d bet on it.
