Designer Rolf Hay
WHO is he?
Rolf Hay is a Danish furniture designer and co-founder of the furniture brand HAY. The brand has existed for 12 years and they have just opened first retail shop in Asia in Shanghai.
Tell us some of your works and the one you are most proud of.
One of the bestselling items we have had at HAY is the AAC, About A Chair. I believe it is because of the chairs simple expression and at the same time, it still allows the consumer to be creative in terms of which model, fabric and color to choose. It is also easy to combine with other furniture of different styles since the expression is subtle and minimalistic. It comes in various models and types and has been a really popular product among our customers.
Are you currently involved in any project?
We have just created a new brand called “Wrong for HAY” in collaboration with the British designer Sebastian Wrong. This is our sister brand and the collection has a really interesting style and expression.
Describe your design style.
At HAY we create something I like to call “democratic” design. The furniture has the same high design quality as the 1950s and 1960s, but it is designed in a contemporary context. The initial idea was to be a supplier of design furniture for our own generation. I like our designs to have a special feature without seeming too extravagant. I appreciate design that combines functionality and aesthetics while screening out everything that is unnecessary.
Where are you most creative?
When I am amongst other creative individuals. We only start collaborations with other designers when we can feel the right chemistry. When the chemistry is right, the design will be a natural outcome of that.
What does your home mean to you?
My home is a peaceful and sacred place for me. It is filled with travel memories and family heirlooms, creating a very warm and safe surrounding for me and my family to live in.
What do you collect?
When I go traveling with my wife and children we like to collect different souvenirs and beautiful items from the places we visit. I love exploring new cultures and I find it very inspirational from a design perspective as well.
Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?
I came to Shanghai this time first and foremost to see our newly opened HAY shop on Taikang Road and also to participate in Design Shanghai, our first fair in China.
What will be the next big design trend?
It is really hard to forecast a design trend worldwide, but for China I believe the entire country is more and more affected by Western culture and I think this has awaken a curiosity in the Chinese consumer. I believe that they are much more interested and open towards foreign designers and the ideas they bring.
