Designs on hospitality
WHO is he?
As design principal and partner, Eric Ullmann has a long list of international hospitality projects in the United States, the Virgin Islands, Central America, Europe, the United Arab Emirates and China. His enthusiasm for innovative design and the pursuit of international recognition have helped make Design Duncan Miller Ullmann (DMU) one of the leading hospitality design firms in the industry.
Ullmann lives in Shanghai with his family and is managing partner of DMU Asia. He has been instrumental in leading one of the fastest growing design firms and his foresight in the industry and passion for creative design continue to set precedents in hospitality design.
Tell us about your work and what you're most proud of?
From private residences to destination restaurants to integrated mega resorts, I've had great success creating unique, memorable experiences worldwide for my clients.
In Shanghai, the Yangtze Boutique Hotel captures the rich heritage of the property, the region, and the era through a true boutique experience. With its charm of 1930s Shanghai and the fascination of the modern Pearl City, it's is a distinctive signature of elegance in design.
And recently opened as the largest resort casino within this region, Sands Cotai Central Macau establishes a uniquely defined experience of a modern day Silk Road.
Although these significant projects have been very fulfilling and great achievements for DMU, my proudest work seems to be constantly evolving on the boards.
What projects are you currently involved in?
I have cultivated a studio of talented designers, project directors and a cohesive administration team, enabling me oversee the conceptual development and overall vision of each and every project. Naturally, I have projects and clients that receive more attention, but they all receive my involvement.
Describe your design style.
We dare to be different and tend to set trends. I don't believe in a particular style; I believe our custom designs evolving into unique experiences.
Under what circumstances are you most creative?
Deadlines. Typically in collaboration with my studio in Shanghai, the most innovative ideas are conceived when we have tight deadlines. We make intuitive, concise decisions that exemplify a clear design direction tailored for each client.
What does your home mean to you?
Anywhere I can reach out to my family and friends. Living in Asia for eight years and traveling the world for over 15 years, I have found it quite easy to make any place a home.
What do you collect?
Currency and photos from around the world.
Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?
When I'm not at my studio in Shanghai, I like to enjoy the ever-evolving Tianzifang.
What will be the next major design trend?
In China, there will be greater focus on functional design or what we call intellectual design and color. For almost a decade we have seen earth tones and neutral color schemes - it's time to add color to our lives!
