Drawing inspiration from local cultures and resources

Who is he?

Hangzhou native Xie Tian is a famous interior designer with 12 years of experience in the field. He is the director of the Art Design Institute of China Academy of Art; an associate professor; a director of YASHA Design Institute; and vice director of the China Building Decoration Designing Committee.

Tell us about some of your work and the one you are most proud of.

It’s really hard to say. I have been an interior designer for 12 years and I have designed a lot of interior spaces. To meet the requirements of markets I have tried different styles, like European new classic and new Chinese traditional.

Actually, as an interior designer, I encourage people to design their own space. Create your own and add your favorite elements in your living or working space.

What projects are you currently involved in?

I am busy with the interior design for a club and two villas in Sanya City, Hainan  Province.

Describe your design style.

My favorite is the “new Chinese traditional” style. This concept is about utlizing local cultures. Local cultures present the pride and confidence of a nation and traditions.

Where are you most creative?

We need to look at those beautiful things above your aesthetic standard.

Designers need inspiration, and inspiration comes from life. If you don’t know how to live a decent life, how can you design beauty?

For me, travel is a good way to explore beauty and get inspiration.

What does your home mean to you?

To me “home” is a harbor, protecting you and making you feel safe and stable. It also refers to happiness and warmth.

The style of my own home is modern and simple — it’s clean, not limited to some particular style, and contains different furniture and art pieces.

What do you collect?

I collect traditional folk arts such as pottery and porcelain, bone china, and tangsancai (three-colored glazed pottery). I have a tiny museum of my collection at home in Hangzhou.

Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?

I like this city and its fusion of different cultures from the world. I like visiting hotels with good architecture. Fine restaurants with good food and decor are another favorite of mine.

What will be the next big design trend?

Sustainability. Our planet is threatened by global warming and natural resources are slowly being used up. This keyword is also the trend in interior design.

And my solution is making full use of local resources.

For example, it is a luxury to use imported Italian ceramic tiles, but it’s not sustainable. High transport costs make this design high-carbon.

My principle is to explore the design elements and materials close to you. That’s also why I advocate the “new Chinese traditional” style.
