Italian designer creates freedom in home spaces
WHO is he?
Giuseppe Bavuso is the designer and art director of Rimadesio. Bavuso is an architect and designer whose projects blend precision, clean, minimalist style, enormous technical skill and proficient use of high-tech and innovative materials. Bavuso lives and works in Seregno, in Italy’s Lombardy region. In 1986, Bavuso opened up his own product design office. He still works as a designer and consultant for decor companies and bio-medical equipment companies.
Bavuso was awarded the first prize in the “International Design Award” in 1990 in Cologne for the “Pick Up” padded furniture for Brunati. He was awarded first Prize in 1994 in Milano’s “Young & Design” for the “Siparium” system of sliding doors for Rimadesio.
He has received multiple other awards since.
In the decorating sector, Bavuso has worked with a number of companies in Italy and around the world as a designer and art-director, and was involved in all aspects of the product, from concept to engineering to visual communications. He has also handled design of the backdrop for exhibition installations and design and organization of exhibition and showroom spaces.
Tell us about some of your works, and name the one you are most proud of.
I used to plan systems having a high technology content where the products are characterized by a very pure design. I can say that Siparium of Rimadesio is among the products I am most proud of: designed in 1982, it was the first system of sliding partition walls, in glass and aluminium, completely made to measure. It was the first step forward in defining a new collection that reflected a dynamic conception of home spaces. These systems guarantee you the freedom to choose the layout of home spaces, to make them bigger or smaller, but where light remains of utmost importance.
More than to be proud of some works or a single product, we are proud of launching a new trend in the design. We opened a new course, a new interpretation that became a trend tied to our vision of the design.
We created an interpretation that did not exist before: We used a material like aluminium or glass, which was typically used in the industrial system and not in furniture for the domestic use. We transferred these materials in the “homes” and gave them a very clear cut.
Are you currently involved in any project?
There is always the wish to evolve, never give up and always to call into question every day but always being tied to our principles: an open discussion about the way we develop projects, the thinking and the values we want to seek with our work.
Describe your design style.
Pure, precise, elegant, coherent and with a technological vision connected to modernity.
Where are you most creative?
In the research of technical solutions that combines design and function in a very refined way.
