Strokes of genius

The Chinese character 浼 "xi奴" consists of two parts, left and right - one means "person" and the other means "wood." Can you guess the meaning of the combination?

Maybe I'd better give you an important hint. The right part, 鏈 "m霉" also has the meaning of "tree" in Chinese. But don't think of Pinocchio. Now, here's the Chinese ancestors' logic: The character浼 "xi奴," describing "a person leaning on a tree," indicates "rest." For example,

浼戞伅 xi奴 xi

v. rest

濂藉ソ浼戞伅涓涓嬶紒

H菐oh菐o xi奴xi y铆xi脿!

Take a good rest!

n. break

M臎i ji茅 k猫 zh艒ngji膩n y菕u sh铆 f膿nzh艒ng xi奴xi.

There are ten minutes' breaks between the lessons.

浼戝亣 xi奴 ji脿

v. have a holiday, go on a vacation

鑰佹澘浠婂ぉ浼戝亣銆

L菐ob菐n j墨nti膩n xi奴ji脿.

閫浼 tu矛 xi奴

v. retire

涓浗鐢蜂汉60宀侀浼戙

Zhnggu贸 n谩nr茅n 60 su矛 tu矛xi奴.

Chinese men retire at 60.

Besides "rest," 浼 "xi奴" also means "cease, give up, stop" in the words like

浼戜細 xi奴 hu矛

v. adjourn

浼戝 xi奴 xu茅

v. leave of absence (from school)

浼戞垬 xi奴 zh脿n

v./ n. truce, cease-fire

Last but not least, 浼 "xi奴" is the transcription of the English name "Hugh" - in case you want to chat about 浼戞牸鍏扮壒 "Xi奴 G茅l谩nt猫" (Hugh Grant) or 浼戞澃鍏嬫浖 "Xi奴 Ji茅k猫m脿n" (Hugh Jackman) in Mandarin.
