TCM Treasures - Cockscomb flower 鸡冠花

THE bright red cockscomb flower, or jiguan hua, is important in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the TCM bible "Ben Cao Gang Mu" ("Compendium of Materia Medica"), the flower is used to treat dysentery, bloody stools and uterine bleeding. Its seed is effective in cleaning the liver and improving eyesight.

As a "cold" TCM herb with a bitter taste, cockscomb flower can dispel inner heat, remove dampness and stop bleeding.

Medical science has shown the plant is rich in protein, vitamins, folic acid, amino acids, 13 trace elements and more than 50 coenzymes. Regular use of cockscomb petals and seeds can provide key nutrients to the body. It is a crop in the US.

According to a Chinese legend, a centipede demon often disguised itself as a woman to seduce young men. She killed many and ate their brains.

When she visited a young man's home his rooster recognized the demon. After a fierce fight, they both died and the woman reverted back into a centipede. The man buried the rooster in a nearby valley, where cockscomb flowers suddenly started growing.
