TCM Treasures - Jue ming zi 决明子
AS a member of the bean family, jue ming zi is a "cold" traditional Chinese medical herb, with a slightly bitter taste.
It is used to remove liver heat, treat rheumatism and improve kidney function and eyesight.
Jue ming zi is also adored by many women as it aids weight loss. It is also used to treat constipation by removing toxins and lowering blood fat, and helps control blood pressure.
It grows in numerous provinces, such as Anhui, Zhejiang and Guangdong.
But as a "cold" plant, jue ming zi is not suitable for people with a weak stomach and spleen or with low blood pressure.
Jue ming zi goes best with rose, lotus leaves, gou qi zi (wolfberry) and chrysanthemum. And if you make tea, ensure the jue ming zi has been fried in advance.
The herb is also made into a pillow, a practice dating from Song Dynsty (960-1279). A pillow stuffed with three to four kilograms of jue ming zi provides a fragrance akin to a fresh meadow, which eases headaches and dizziness and promotes calmness and sleep.
In addition, a jue ming zi pillow can help alleviate spinal pain and cure hardening of the arteries.
