TCM Treasures - Luo han fruit 罗汉果
RICH in glucose, fructose, Vitamin C and many other nutrients, luo han fruit is a popular fruit and a traditional Chinese medicine widely-used to remove the inner heat from lungs, relieve coughs and sore throats and alleviate asthma.
The fruit, which has a refreshing fragrance and slightly sweet taste, is grown in mountainous areas in Yongfu County, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
According to county annals, the fruit was named after a villager, Luo Han, who discovered the fruit useful in treating bee stings. Now the county produces 200 million of the fruit each year.
But in Chinese, luo han also refers to a spiritual practitioner who has attained a high level. Legend has it that in ancient times a plague of insects swept the country and Buddha sent 19 such figures to Earth to save humanity. One swore that he would not return to heaven until the disaster was over. He then turned into a green round fruit. This story is also the origin of why in Chinese Buddhism there are 18 luo han figures.
