TCM Treasures: Orange

Orange

Simplified Chinese: 橘子 Pinyin: jǘ zi

Sweet, juicy orange may be many people’s favorite fruit for the season. It not only provides vitamin C, but also is a very useful food in TCM with its seeds, peel and flesh effective TCM materials.

The substances made from oranges generally all work to regulate energy circulation and relieve coughing, but with slight difference in targeting.

Orange peel: Generally called chen pi in Chinese, which means old peel. It is usually collected from mature oranges in late autumn or early winter and dried for use.

It is a very common “warm” TCM remedy that helps regulate energy, dispel pathogenic dampness and dissolve phlegm. It is often used for the digestive system and relieving coughing.

Tangerine pith: Many people get rid of the white fibers covered the flesh before eating, but the fibers are very good for health, according to TCM. The fibers are called ju luo in Chinese, which means orange vessels. It is mildly “cold” and can help activate blood and energy circulation, while relieving coughing.

Modern research also finds it is effective in keeping vessels elastic.

Tangerine seed: This is a “neutral” element that helps eliminate stagnation and relieve related pain. It is more often used for relieving hernia, mastitis, and aches in the urinary system.

Orange flesh: Fresh orange flesh can help relieve coughing, while in TCM it is more often processed into ju bing (orange cake) with honey, which helps remove energy stagnation and dissolve phlegm.

For energy stagnation:

Boil 12g orange peel, 2.5g zhi shi (immature bitter orange) and 6g ginger with 500ml water. Turn to gentle heat, cook until 200ml water remains. Divide decoction into two portions, drink separately.

Benefits: helps regulate energy circulation, relieves shortness of breath and vomiting.

For mastitis:

Pan-fry 20g tangerine seeds with a little yellow wine. Add three bowls of water and cook until one and half is left. Divide decoction into two parts, drink one a day.

Benefits: helps relieve inflammation and pain.

For stomachache due to pathogenic coldness:

Cook decoction with 3g tangerine pith and 6g ginger. Add brown sugar when almost done. Drink one portion.

Benefits: helps warm stomach, relieves pain.
