TCM Treasures - Radix sileris
SIMPLIFIED Chinese: 防风; Pinyin: fáng fēng
In traditional Chinese medicine, the wind is believed to be a pathogenic energy in the universe that causes health problems - mostly cold and flu.
Fang feng (radix sileris), which literally means "prevent wind," is the herb widely used for preventing and relieving such problems.
The herb is said to be named after a wronged hero who had created flood control methods, alongside legendary Chinese ruler Da Yu.
However, Fang Feng was late for Da Yu's awarding ceremony because he stopped to help villagers with flood control on his way. The ruler mistook Fang Feng's lateness as arrogance and had him killed.
As he died, Fang Feng spat out blood, and an umbrella-like herb grew from where it fell.
Many people had caught cold controlling flooding, and dreamt of Fang Feng telling them to eat the umbrella-like herb. Followed his advice, they recovered, and named the herb after him in gratitude.
Fang feng is a mildly warm herb in TCM that helps dispel pathogenic wind, cold and dampness. It is widely used to treat fever, headaches, bone and muscle pain, as well as diarrhea and rashes.
