TCM Treasures Sharpleaf galangal fruit

Sharpleaf galangal fruit

Simplified Chinese: 益智仁 Pinyin: yì zhì rén

Yi zhi ren or sharpleaf galangal fruit, is one of the four Southern Medicines in TCM that only grows in south China.

Sharpleaf galangal fruit mainly grows in Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan and Fujian provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It fruits in summer. The fruits are most effective when they turn red from green between summer and autumn. They are collected then and dried for use.

Though sharpleaf galangal fruit is more often prescribed for kidney deficiencies, it was first identified as an herb for wisdom in a Chinese legend.

A scholar who dreamed of passing the ancient provincial civil service exam was under a lot of pressure, which led to a kidney deficiency as well as sleeplessness, poor memory, poor appetite and excessive urination at night. He ate some fruit in a garden. They tasted good and as he ate them, he found his urination problem largely relieved.

Since he could now sleep well, his appetite and memory improved. He passed the exam and named the fruit “yi zhi ren,” or wisdom-benefitting nut.

Sharpleaf galangal fruit is a “warm” herb in TCM that travels through heart, spleen and kidney meridians. It helps warm the kidneys and spleen, and relieves vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, bed wetting, involuntary ejaculation and over-active saliva secretion.
