TCM Treasures - Wu huan zi 无患子
WU huan zi (sapindus) - sometimes known as soapberry - which flourishes south of the Yangtze River, is one of the oldest cleaning agents in China, known among Chinese as hand-washing fruit.
Ancient people in India also discovered the plant's cleaning properties, leading to it also being known as "India's soap."
According to traditional Chinese medicine classic text "Ben Cao Gang Mu" "Compendium of Materia Medica", wu huan zi is a cold medicine with a bitter taste and slightly poisonous properties.
It mainly works on the heart and lungs, and people who have a weak spleen and stomach should use it with caution.
Its dried seeds are used in medicines to dispel inner heat, kill bacteria and treat swellings, coughs and sore throats.
Wu huan zi was also an ancient beauty product, used to treat dandruff, nourish skin, help fade liver spots and treat sun-damaged skin.
Science has found that wu huan zi is the world's best natural cleaning agent with rich foam and strong detergency.
