TCM treasures-Lily root
LILY root is a highly recommended food in the summer as it can help dispel pathogenic heat, and soothe various discomfort caused by the hot environment.
The soft and sweet taste makes it a popular ingredient in desserts, congee and other recipes. And due to the good meaning of its Chinese name baihe (100 together), it is often used in wedding ceremonies as a wish for being together for 100 years.
According to a legend, it was first discovered as a food to live on.
In a pirate attack, the women and children of a village were kidnapped and taken to an isolated island along with the treasure that was stolen. The pirates were killed in a heavy storm while on their way to pillage another village.
Though the women and children were happy they were no longer at the mercy of the pirates, their food supply on the island soon ran out.
One woman found a garlic-like thing while digging. After cooking it, it tasted a bit sweet and it helped relieve hunger. After days of eating the "garlic," some sick and weak people felt much better. The residents were rescued by a herbalist who passed by the island a year later. They showed him the "garlic."
Herbalists tested the root and found it can help nourish the lungs, relieve coughing, dispel pathogenic heat and sooth nerves. Since about 100 people survived on the island, Lily's root was called baihe.
Modern research found lily root is also effective in accelerating the metabolism and that it is good for the skin.Prescriptions & Usage:
