WHO’s here: creative visionaries
“HEALTH for all and all for health” encapsulates the theme of the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion, which will be held in Shanghai from Monday through Thursday.
The conference, co-sponsored by the World Health Organization and the Chinese government, will provide a forum for more than 1,000 leaders in politics, health and economic development to share their ideas about how to improve the wellbeing of the world’s 7.4 billion people.
The full theme of the meeting is “Promoting Health in Sustainable Development Goals: Health for All and All for Health.”
“This conference is being held at the dawn of a larger global development agenda — one that places great emphasis on the importance of health in the future of all countries,” said WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, the former health secretary of Hong Kong. “Countries cannot develop sustainably without health, and health cannot be achieved without sustainable development.”
The site of the conference speaks volumes about Shanghai’s emergence as a leader in world health policies.
The city is charting a new course for the next 15 years, aimed at inspiring governments at all levels and the public to grasp the great potential of promoting health across all sectors of society.
As one of the highlights of this year’s event, the Shanghai Declaration on Health Promotion will be delivered tomorrow as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders last year. The goal is to end poverty and inequality and tackle climate change.
“We look forward to seeing ministers, mayors and other leaders come together to grapple with some of the key questions that will shape the sustainable development agenda for the next 15 years — like rapid urbanization, the increasing burden of chronic, lifestyle-related diseases and the need for innovation in tackling these challenges,” said Dr Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO representative in China.
Discussions at the conference will be focused improving urban health, strengthening good governance and promoting health literacy.
Keynote speakers will include heads of UN agencies, top officials from the governments of China and Shanghai, ministers and mayors from than 100 countries and UN goodwill ambassadors. Other speakers, such as former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, will address the conference via video link.
Conference delegates have been invited to tour sites in the city where innovations in health promotion and sustainable development have been implemented. Those visits are scheduled on Wednesday, which is China Day at the conference, according to the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission.
The 49 tour routes span 15 districts of the city, and each includes a school, a workplace and a neighborhood community, the commission said.
The conference in Shanghai marks the 30th anniversary of the first global health promotion conference, which generated the landmark Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. Since then, the event has become a platform for WHO and member states to discuss important global health issues and set goals for promoting health worldwide.
