A model of welcome simplicity
WHEN I first met Sun Feifei in September 2008, the 179cm-tall supermodel-to-be was still a student at Suzhou University. She had recently won the first place in the Elite Model Look China contest.
Shy and nervous backstage, the fresh champion said her goal was to become "China's Cindy Crawford."
Two months later, the Shandong Province native finished third in the Elite Model Look world final, and began her career as one of the most sought-after and admired Asian models.
Based in New York, Sun is one of the rising stars among the growing number of Asian top models, alongside her friends Liu Wen and Qin Shupei. She is a fixture at top fashion shows and has appeared in numerous fashion magazines and advertising campaigns.
The 21-year-old is known for her versatility in front of the camera. She was ultra glamorous in "The Power of Glamour," shot by iconic photographer Steven Meisel for Vogue Italy's January issue, mysterious and edgy in "Since When Can Weathermen Predict the Weather" in the UK's i-D magazine's December 2010 issue, and appeared to be cool and androgynous in the latest Dsquared spring/summer 2011 campaign.
Sun was recently in Shanghai to attend the 2010 ELLE China Beauty Star Awards. She was the cover face of the fashion magazine's December 2010 issue. The 21-year-old said she loves Shanghai - her boyfriend, who spotted her at a students' beauty contest and encouraged her to enter the Elite Model Look contest, is a fashion photographer based in the city.
When she is off duty, Sun prefers to dress in a "simple and comfortable" style. Unlike most of her model pals who enjoy mix-and-match fun, she believes in "less is more." It's actually not that difficult to copy her daily look
Q: How do you define your personal style?
A: Simple and comfortable.
Q: Where do you usually go shopping?
A: SOHO, New York. I'm a typical otaku woman (women who enjoy staying at home) when I'm back in China. I also love shopping with friends when I'm working abroad.
Q: Is there a single fashion item that you can't resist?
A: Handbags. Sometimes a bag can magically change the whole look. Even if you are wearing the same outfit, it feels different when you match it with a tote bag or a clutch. Also, I always think a handbag is where a girl hides her secrets - only her closest friends can see what's inside. Oh, and I have quite many white T-shirts - those simple, clean ones. They match everything.
Q: You are called one of the fastest rising supermodels in 2010. What's your view?
A: It's a good thing. I hope I can be more mature and confident, and make my family happy and proud.
Q: What's your most unforgettable working/runway experience.
A: The Loewe fall/winter 2010 show at Paris Fashion Week. The whole setting made me feel like I was inside an old Shanghai villa. It made me miss Shanghai so much that I thought it would be my best performance during the fashion week. However, I didn't realize the shoes were too big only until five minutes before it was my turn. If you were at the show, you would have noticed that my shoes kept on falling down while I was walking. I was so nervous and didn't know what to do when I returned backstage to change. The show director and designer didn't blame me but told me that I was doing great. They asked the assistant to place more tapes in my shoes to keep them from falling down. I really appreciate what they did, which gave me the confidence to finish the show. It is that kind of encouragement that helps me grow all the way to become today's Sun Feifei.
Q: Have you ever fallen down at a fashion show? If you fell, what would you do?
A: Such things happen all the time. Fortunately, I have never fallen down myself on the runway but I have seen others (falling down). If I ever fell down, I would just get up, take a deep breath and finish my turn. Just be professional. I won't feel embarrassed.
Q: What are your career plans? Have you considered also hosting a TV show, designing clothes or acting in a film?
A: Not really. I want to devote myself to modeling for the time being. I love modeling. But I won't say no if good opportunities come.
Q: Any tips for keeping fit?
A: Eat carefully ... and exercise.
Q: For the upcoming spring/summer season, please recommend some must-have fashion pieces.
A: Shoes and bags in bright hues. Chanel White Essential Light Reflecting Whitening Compact Foundation.
