A new star shines in Shanghai
YOUNG Chinese violinist Wang Zhijiong has been acclaimed as "a rare new star in Asia" by Gramophone magazine.
Playing a violin made by Sanctus Seraphin in 1747, one of around only 30 such instruments known to exist, the artist will be delighting local music lovers tonight with a program of classic music.
The violin recital will be at Shanghai Times Square and Wang and pianist Zhang Weicong will perform works by Mozart, Stravinsky and Faure.
Born in Shanghai, Wang began to study violin when she was three years old. Professor Yu Lina used to be her teacher.
She began to attract worldwide attention at violin competitions while still at secondary school. In 1998, she was awarded first prize in the 8th Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in France, winning praise from Menuhin himself. He subsequently invited her to perform with him.
In 2008 she was invited to the Chamber Music Connects the World organized by the Kronberg Academy and played with legendary artists such as Gidon Kremer and Lynn Harrell.
Wang recently released her first violin recital album, which includes notable and everlasting melodies of different styles.
Cathy Hau, deputy general manager of Shanghai Times Square, says the venue had already hosted several successful concerts this year, including performances featuring musicians from Argentina and Italy.
This summer, the performance program was concentrating on artists with Chinese roots and an international reputation.
Wang's violin recital follows Jenny Lin's solo piano concert and Leung Kin-fung's violin trio.
"We have been dedicated to bringing international high-quality music and art to the city," Hau says.
"I am very delighted that we are able to give a stage to three of Asia's most respected young artists."
