Bagging some of Diana's enduring appeal

PRINCESS Diana was renowned around the world - not least in China, where she remains an iconic figure - both for her humanity and for being one of the most elegant women of her time.

During her lifetime, every detail of Diana's outfits and accessories was scrutinized in the press, everything from her ballgowns to swimsuits, handbags to shoes, hats to jewelry was the subject of debate.

Although Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, her style has endured, with admirers among designers and fashion fans across the globe.

Precious moments of the Princess of Wales' life and her unique style have been collected in a limited edition photography book "Timeless Icon." Supported by iconic Italian brand Tod's and published by Electa, this seeks to celebrate Diana's life.

Images of the late princess with a Tod's D Bag (which came to be named after Diana) in nude leather and pebble-soled moccasins were on display last week at Plaza 66 on Nanjing Road, sponsored by Tod's.

Among the 25 images, Diana is photographed both at formal events, such as meeting soldiers, and in everyday moments - carrying a tennis racket or going to a restaurant in London.

Whatever the occasion, Princess Diana is seen carrying her favorite tote bag from Tod's.

Tod's says the show provides an opportunity to celebrate the compassion of Diana, who was widely praised for her work with HIV and Aids patients and for raising awareness about landmines, among other causes.

"When we heard Electa was dedicating a book to Diana, we thought it was a good opportunity for us to sponsor this book, bringing the core values Diana represented to people around the world," Edoardo Vittucci, regional director of Tod's China, said.

"Timeless Icon" was launched during Milan fashion week in February before traveling to New York and Shanghai. It will continue to Tokyo and Hong Kong.

"Diana was very close to our brand, carrying our products on many different occasions of her life.

"Her favorite tote bag was the first model of the D Bag, that later Tod's President and CEO Diego Della Valle decided to dedicate to her," Vittucci said.

"Diana's values are recognized by different generations. Although she has been gone since 1997, people still respect her. Even in this very fast-changing world, her values have not lost their power and intensity," Vittucci added.

Since introduced in 1990s as part of the first ever Tod's bag collection, the D Bag has become a Tod's icon, available every season in new materials and colors.

Exclusively for the sponsorship of "Timeless Icon," this season Tod's is launching the D.D. Bag, an evolution of the iconic style.

Meanwhile, the Tod's D Bag "Couture" collection comprises a number of limited edition D Bags designed to illustrate the very best of Made in Italy craftsmanship.

"The D Bag is one of the most iconic items we have that represents both tradition and innovation.

"It is a timeless icon because it is something that goes through different generations, starting from an elegant and sophisticated concept and incorporating innovation and modernity," Vittucci said.

Another Tod's talking point this season, according to Vittucci, is the Signature Bag.

Vittucci said this presents the essence of the brand, with a special texture inspired by Gommino pebble pattern on its moccasin soles - a hallmark of Tod's - imprinted on the leather.

"Bags represent the highest growth among merchandise ranges in the company and our new creative director of women's collections Allessandra Facchinetti is helping us develop more accessories and ready-to-wear without losing our traditions and philosophy," Vittucci said.

Tod's is also reinforcing its profile in China, in cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu.
