East meets West in graduate show
THE International Fashion Academy (IFA Paris) Shanghai presented its most outstanding graduates at its recent 2012 Graduation Fashion Show.
Taking the theme of East meets West, the designs that made it down the runway were strongly individual, yet often complementary.
Elegant eveningwear made up most of the show. Sleek silhouettes and contrasting colors seemed to be a favorite, while beautiful autumnal tones, like browns and dark reds, and nude colors also stood out. Soft lines were preferred, and were seen on both billowing gowns and structured trousers.
Among the dresses, a matching pair that featured a poncho-inspired look with calligraphy-inspired prints was one of the highlights.
Another designer sent three ready-to-wear winter pieces down the runway. Although simple compared to other designs, the choice of a pants suit, a skirt combination and a jacket with a grey-black-white combination with ruffles gave the whole look an edge.
Highlights of the night were pieces by Sabine Ducasse that opened the show. The bright palette, hyperrealist elements and head-to-toe cartoonesque prints had a hint of Mary Katrantzou - bold, loud without being overboard, and eye-catching - and stood out among the darker hues.
The idea of a jumpsuit with an emphasis on its shoulder and collar designs, and the flared bottoms of the knee-length skirt resembling that of the traditional wear worn by Beijing Opera performers was also spot-on for the theme of the show.
The designers featured all presented something inspiring and often unique, and as graduates of one of the leading fashion schools in both China and France, it is easy to imagine them strutting down the runway after their own successful solo shows, waving to their adoring crowd.
