Girl power returns

PANTSUITS, knee-length dresses, pencil skirts -- we're seeing a comeback of these traditional "power women" pieces on the fashion runways.

In her first show since leaving Chlo?? in 2006 to focus on motherhood, Phoebe Philo sent out a group of models wrapped in earth tones, modified trenches, chunky wood wedges, lots of leather and military effects. "I wanted to clean it up, refocus, and present a strong, powerful woman," she said.

Yes. "Strong and powerful." That's how we -- modern career ladies -- would like to look in the new era.

But never too mannish. Giorgio Armani, best known for his classic and timeless style, for example, has picked up a surprisingly bold, bright palette for his latest spring/summer collection featuring sharp jackets and tailored dresses in fuchsia, royal blue and bright yellow. Smart ladies also know how to use the right accessories, from belts, scarves and statement jewelry pieces to shoes and bags, to drive home the point.

The New Style of Pantsuits

Pantsuits are no longer tightly fitted but they feature more casual, loose shapes, like those worn by Chloe girls on the spring/summer runways.

For this season, designer Hannah MacGibbon has developed a wardrobe based on roomy jackets, easy trousers and flat sandals. To avoid being too boyish, she matched them with light, feminine chiffon shirts in soft pastel tones.

You can also match such loose jackets with dresses in light fabrics and soft hues, or wear them with skirts featuring feminine ruffles instead of trousers. The fluid silk jumpsuit by Marella (pictured right) is stylish, comfortable and complements the body shape.

Last but not least, keep in mind that black is out, earth tones are in.

The Essential Accessories

Limited jewelry, moderate shoes, sparse makeup and perfume -- that's what we keep in mind when going to work. High heels are essential for women because they help to set us apart from men. But we don't want to wear killer stilettoes to work for risk of causing injury and long-term foot and back pain.

To solve the problem, casual shoemakers such as ECCO have developed ideal heels that are both fashionable and comfortable for career girls. The latest "Italy" collection is made of black patent leather in a feminine bondage design. Its comfy heel (75 millimeters) makes it fit for both office wear and cocktail parties.

Watches are also essential accessories for office ladies as a showcase of their taste and status. However, it would be weird if you wear a Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin to work unless you are super rich. We recommend the "Maxime Manufacture Lady" model by Frederique Constant.

Targeting young, sophisticated customers, the Swiss watchmaker produces complicated watches at affordable prices.

Statement necklaces are no longer en vogue this season but opt for an equally shining ring or brooch. Or simply use a belt to add flair to an otherwise boring outfit.
