Preparing for pre-fall
WHILE the upcoming spring/summer collections are all about bright hues and floral patterns, the ensuing pre-fall 2011 season witnesses the return of neutral tones, clean lines, relaxed silhouettes, layered looks and flared-leg trousers.
Trousers have made a major comeback, be it the wide-leg style, cropped pants or bulgy shorts.
Elsewhere, vintage-inspired silhouettes and spirits still have a great impact on many designers - and there's a walk through the decades from the 1940s to the 1970s.
Neutral
Very different from the bright, floral-patterned offerings in their spring/summer collections, designers are keeping things neutral this pre-fall season, as shades of tan, brown and beige find their way onto sweet Peter Pan-collared dresses, feminine pearl-beaded coats and fresh takes on the maxi skirt.
"I've played with really bright colors the last two seasons," said designer Jason Wu about his latest pre-fall collection. "So this time I brought in slate grays and blues; throwing lots of subtle colors together to create a bigger effect."
Other designers including Phillip Lim, Elie Tahari and Thakoon all introduced a palette of neutral tones in their pre-fall collections.
Layers
Fashion is unpredictable. You can either wear airy dresses in winter or put on chunky sweaters in the (still very hot) pre-fall season.
For pre-fall 2011, designers pile on cozy layers and chic outerwear. While Giorgio Armani opts for a rabbit-fur vest over his classic pinstriped suit for his Armani Collezioni collection, Veronica Etro sticks to the house's signature prints and adds a boyfriend cardigan over a feminine Etro dress that can take her customer to the office, then out to dinner.
Trousers
Trousers have made a triumphant return to the fore over recent years thanks to the "powerful women" concept in the fashion industry.
This pre-fall, wide-leg trousers are back in sleek versions inspired by the tailored 1970s style. They are best to be worn with slim jackets and distinctive tops. Or you can choose a silk shirt in neutral shades to match a pair of more eye-catching, striped flared-leg trousers.
Vintage
Designers often look to the past for inspiration, and this pre-fall season is no exception. At Diane von Furstenberg, Yvan Mispelaere explores the glamour and ease of 1970s American sportswear, while Nicole Miller mixes 1940s femininity with the futuristic space age. And the design team behind See by Chloe adds 1960s flair to a naughty schoolgirl vibe.
The signature Missoni patterns are still there, but for pre-fall, Angela Missoni has bundled them up in cozy knits with a 1960s slant.
