Ready for Jeans
THE first days of autumn call for jeans. This season, the traditional fabric arrives with a strong presence not only in pants or shorts, but also in shirts, jackets, dresses and even corsets, adding a touch of lightness and playfulness to a sometimes dark, serious fall look.
Many women, however, are frustrated in finding the perfect pair of jeans. A recent survey by Levi Strauss & Co shows that more than half of women surveyed (54 percent) try on at least 10 pairs of jeans to find the one to buy. Most women (87 percent) wish they could find jeans that fit better than the ones they own.
But shopping for jeans does not have to be a nightmare. Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect pair of jeans:
Look for jeans to complement your body type
Select many different styles, even if you think they may not be flattering, and take them all into the dressing room at the same time so you can compare them. And don't stick to one size when shopping for jeans, because different brands offer different cuts. The same size in different brands can have very different effect.
According to Levi Strauss President Robert Hanson, the traditional emphasis on waist-size and silhouette hasn't really given women what they are looking for. The ideal jeans should complement the body type.
Small changes make big differences
For example, if the front pockets are crafted smaller, the legs look longer. If the back pockets are lifted, it can help slim down the back side.
"Avoid prominent logos on the back pockets because they draw attention to your bottom," says Paris Pan from the premium denim brand 7 for all mankind. "But if you are confident about your figure, those studded with crystals and rivets peeking out of deconstructed back pockets definitely add novelty."
Jeans can be perfect match to many looks
For this autumn and winter, the military look is a big trend. Several big denim brands have rolled out denims to go with the military look. "To give a romantic lady touch to the military look, remember to wear a pair of high-heeled, knee-high boots or velvet flats," suggests Pan.
Faux fur is another big trend this season - think Chanel's tweed coats and boots with "fantasy fur." Match it with a feminine silk blouse and a pair of flare jeans.
Denim shirts are also quite popular. Wear one with a camel coat as a Chloe model did on the runway. "Denim and camel are a perfect match," says local fashion writer/illustrator MMKM. "But remember to complete the look with a pair of flare pants for a casual yet elegant look. Tight pants won't work."
Pay attention to the tunes
As most designers have gone back to the 1950s and 1970s for inspirations, this season's fashion is all about paying tribute to the past. Thus, the vintage straight-leg jeans with natural washings have also made a comeback, according to Eleven Cui from G Star.
"Keep the denim tone not so dark and add a bit of bright color," she says. "For example, wear bright green or yellow leggings under denim shorts and match the leggings with a simple, bright-hued cardigan. You will look fresh and different."
