Retro and vintage fashion feast
RETRO style has made a big comeback.
You can easily find 1980s-inspired leather biker jackets and exaggerated accessories, or the 1970s-type flared trousers and platform shoes in fast-fashion chains along busy business streets.
To Mayumi Sato, a Japanese designer who owns a small boutique on Anfu Road, real vintage pieces are far more intriguing than retro-style items. However, she found it difficult to source quality vintage pieces in Shanghai, especially those made outside of China.
Sato frequently travels to Europe, especially France, on her vintage collection expeditions. Over three years she has mined second-hand markets and vintage boutiques in Paris for accessories, from leather boots to sandals and shoulder bags to clutches.
Starting today, she will display and sell selected items from her vast vintage collections for one month. All of them are carefully handpicked, mostly in good condition. Each piece is unique. And most important, all the bags, shoes and other small accessories were made in Europe, mostly France and Italy.
"Imagine those tiny shops managed by stubborn shopkeepers with messy displays, as well as flea markets, garage sales and yard sales where you can find the authentic local smells and colors - that's where I found these items," she laughs.
The oldest pair of boots on display dates from the 1950s. They're made of genuine leather with fine silk lining. Some of the bags feature the designs of the "IT" bags of their day. For example, a carmine bag comes with a removable leather string so you can use it either as a clutch or a shoulder bag. The same style can be found in some luxury collections this season.
"I love that every item has a story behind it," Sato says. "They are now in Shanghai looking for another story to live."
Prices range from 800 yuan (US$117) to 2,000 yuan. Most are in good condition.
