Shanghai designer picks Easter to pull rabbit out of hat on Bund

RIGHT after Shanghai Fashion Week’s closure, home-grown fashion designer Helen Lee chose a special day — Easter Day — to debut her fall/winter 2014 collection at the former Union Church at Rock Bund Shanghai. The show venue was once the center of the Bund and is steeped in historical significance.

Lee has been inspired by dadaism, surrealism and collage art and her goal was to create a balance between contrasts: dark and light, structured and flowing, creative and classic.

The color black played a strong roll and was mixed with the pastel colors from her previous spring/summer collection. A mix of prints was evident such as the image of a Chinese water wave pattern, houndstooth, rabbits and gradients of colors were organized into layers that created a surreal landscape inspired by dadaism.

The magician’s rabbit was a strong image on the runway. “It symbolizes a link between the natural and supernatural,” Lee said. “Combining this with dramatic cutting, a modern ‘witch’ is playfully created — a powerful female image true to my brand.”

A modern “witch” requires a coat with a perfect silhouette, a pair of stylish boots and a comfortable, easy cashmere sweater. The new collection features all the elements with luxurious materials. Silk and cotton are used for shirts and pants and provide everyday wearability. Air layers provide structure and add a youthful spirit to the collection.

“When it comes to the simplicity of cutting, it always means a clean collection with delicate details and wearable attitude,” the designer said.
