Sheer looks for Shanghai
SEE-THROUGH and sheer fabric, nude colors, hot pants and boy shorts are among some of the key trends this spring/summer. And we have seen them displayed in the city at recent fashion shows by Valentino and Shanghai Tang.
Both fashion houses have launched new stores in the Peninsula Hotel, fast becoming Shanghai's latest luxury landmark.
Valentino held a fashion show in the hotel's salon room and attracted the brand's celebrity customers such as renowned actress Sun Li and Hong Kong top model Gaile Lok. Both appeared in the Italian fashion house's latest spring/summer collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. The duo has created fashion pieces targeting a new Valentino generation who are supposed to like their party dresses to be short and sheer.
The collection features a palette of soft tones of beige, light pink, lavender and gray. Key pieces include embroidered tulle T-shirt dresses, little black dresses and gowns made of swirling organza and printed chiffon. Surprisingly, there was not a single red dress.
Chinese luxury fashion brand Shanghai Tang's spring/summer collection is less fancy but more casual and easier to wear. At a recent fashion show in the Peninsula Hotel's ball room, models, led by Chinese supermodel Sun Feifei, presented a collection inspired by the mountainous landscape of China and the bold optical art movement of 1960s' Hong Kong.
The pieces I liked the most from the collection include a traditional silk qipao featuring retro, optical patterns in black and yellow, a sheer black and white silk blouse in the "clouds" print and silver silk jacquard shorts with a matching long coat. Shorts are must-buy items this season.
