Sporting gear gets snappier

TRADITIONAL sports brands have turned on fashionable new looks through various cross-over projects with artists, musicians and even film productions.

Puma has recently introduced its new brand ambassadors, "Da Mouth," four young hip-hop artists from Taipei, to Shanghai fashion lovers through an event in its flagship store on Nanjing Road W.

Acclaimed as "Asia's Black Eyed Peas," band members are known for their edgy street-fashion style.

Puma's latest spring/summer collection, inspired by the exotic fashion and culture of Africa, are perfect gear for the quartet, who appeared in Shanghai with low-light hair colors in pink, purple, red and electric blue.

The collection features a palette of bold, vivid colors as well as eye-catching graphics and totem patterns.

For ladies, there are loose-fit, long T-shirts which are perfect to be worn with leggings and short jackets to create a layered look. For men, there are hoodies and cottons in bright spring colors such as green and yellow. There is also a men's jacket featuring geometric zebra prints.

Meanwhile, adidas Originals has launched a limited-edition collection inspired by the legendary movie series "Star Wars."

The first series of the collection, available in Jiuguang City Plaza and Pudong's Super Brand Mall, includes five shoes and three outfits.

The products take inspiration from the legendary characters, crafts and classic scenes of the original movies and fuse them with iconic adidas Originals silhouettes.

They are also available in multi-branded boutiques such as Source and Novo until March 5.

Clarks Originals has also recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of its classic Desert Boot in the city with a gala party in Xintiandi.

The British brand invited celebrities representing specific generations from the 1950s to 2000s - including well-known qipao designer Xu Shikai, artist Niu An, musician Zhang Yadong, Hong Kong photographer Sunny Lau, Beijing Super VC band and Shanghai actress Shen Lijun - to design their own Desert Boots.

They featured interesting details such as fringes, color combinations and innovative materials.

Born in the 1950s, the Desert Boot was inspired by the crepe-soled boots worn by British officers in World War II.

A combination of natural materials and handcrafted simplicity, the floppy, ankle-high boot has remained an icon, a timeless classic almost unchanged since its launch.

The latest collection of Desert Boot, as well as the classic versions, are available in the "Glossy" boutique on Xingye Road.

Who created it?

Broadcast is a Shanghai-based fashion brand created by a group of young people who love arts and fashion for young people. One of the first home-grown fashion brands by Chinese designers, it targets modern young ladies aged between 25 and 35. Founded in 1997, it now has about 500 stores around the country.

What we like about it?

The clothes are artistic, but never avant-garde. They meet busy office ladies' dressing requirements for varied occasions, moods and personalities. They can also be easily mix-and-matched with each other.

Some of the pieces aptly combine Oriental elements with Western silhouettes. For example, some pieces from the latest spring/summer 2010 collection feature prints inspired by traditional Chinese ink-wash painting. Some are inspired by Japanese minimalist style in structured silhouettes and elaborative cuts.

The latest collection in store features a spring-feel palette of bright yellow, mint green and pastel colors. We like the yellow blouse featuring traditional Chinese ink-wash painting-inspired prints (449 yuan/US$65.80). The sheer, light pink dress featuring floral prints (499 yuan) is sweet and feminine, while the beige trench coat made of thick cotton is an essential piece for the chilly spring.
