Taiwan's heavy hitters

THREE big Taiwanese names are coming our way. The boy band Mayday and songstress Faith Yang will perform this weekend, and the newly formed Super Band of heavyweights makes its Shanghai debut on July 11.

Tickets for Mayday are almost sold out. And tickets for Yang and Super Band are selling very well, with only a small number available now.

Yang makes her Shanghai debut in the concert "Have Faith" at Shanghai Grand Stage.

Mayday and Super Band - formed last December by four big names with a combined 68 years in music - will both perform at Hongkou Football Stadium.

Yang is both a rocker and a fashion model. Cool and stylish, she sings a lot but doesn't talk too much, unlike many other singers, her shows are about singing - only singing, no glitzy costumes and sets - and her style is considered fresh, straight and independent.

Yang was born in Taiwan and began to learn the piano at the age of five. She graduated form Sydney University and began her music career in 1996.

Her first two albums were heavily influenced by Australian pub rock style, with gothic undertones in tracks such as "Silence," "Fear" and "Monster." There was definitely anger there.

Her third album, "Silence," had a lighter pop style and a lot less anger. All three were big hits in Taiwan, and in 2000 Yang won the Taiwan Golden Music Award for Best Female Performer and "Silence" was nominated for Best Album.

She released the album "Continuation" in 2007 and "Self-Selected," with English-language covers, in April. This confirmed her position in the music industry and her popularity on the Chinese mainland.

Her concert tour "Have Faith" started in Taiwan last month; Shanghai is her only stop on the Chinese mainland.

"There won't be many costume changes and I don't pay much attention to the set decoration. The most important thing is singing," says Yang. "The audience can be touched by my music," she told Shanghai Daily in an interview.

The famous rock band Mayday was recently honored as Best Band in the 20th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan. The Shanghai concert is titled "DNA." Mayday has staged many times on the Chinese mainland, most recently in Shanghai last April.

The boy band was formed in the late 1990s by Ashin (vocalist), Monster (lead guitar), Stone (lead guitar), Masa (bass guitar) and Guan You (drums).

"This is our 10th anniversary as a band and the recent award and concert tour are very meaningful," says guitarist Monster. "We hope to bring a great show to Shanghai fans."

The band has sold more than 1 million albums. The songs are mostly in Minnanhua, a dialect widely spoken in Fujian Province and Taiwan, and Mandarin Chinese.

The band is popular for capturing the rebellious mood and characteristics of Taiwanese youth in the middle to late 1990s.

Mayday cites the Beatles as a major influence. The eighth track of their fifth album is titled "John Lennon" in which the band says it wants to become "The Beatles in the Chinese World."

Many of their popular works, including "Viva Love" and "Amour," will be performed in the Shanghai show.

The band will also perform in Beijing and other cities.

This year, one of the most anticipated shows is the concert by the brand-new Super Band. It's a mega combination of veteran talents.

The four-piece band was launched just last September. Members are 55-year-old Lo Ta-yu (Luo Dayou), regarded as the "father of Chinese pop," 51-year-old Jonathan Lee (Lee Zongsheng), who produced many Taiwanese female singers like Sandy Lam and Sylvia Chang, 35-year-old rocker Chang Chen-yue (Zhang Zhenyue) who is famous for his independent rock attitude, and 49-year-old Emil Chau (Zhou Huajian), popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong for his gentle love songs.

Altogether, their age is over 190 years, with around 68 years of entertainment experience. Before they debuted as a band in Beijing during the Spring Festival Gala Show, the four had already released 600 songs and 70 albums.

They released the single "Desperado" as a band last December and will perform the number and plenty of old songs.

"It's not easy to choose from our total 600 works," says Chau. "We'll take suggestions from our fans."

They kicked off a world tour starting in Taipei and Hong Kong in March.

"If people liked our earlier music, then it was right for us to form the band," says Chau.

Adds composer/singer Lee: "It's a great opportunity to gather, pool our talent and sing to our fans."
