Teen model's sweet dreams

HAVING a famous mother is a double-edged sword for British model Tali Lennox, daughter of multi-platinum singer Annie Lennox and Israeli movie producer Uri Fruchtman. The 18-year-old is fashion's brightest new star, and has already walked the runways for important brands such as Prada, Missoni, Marc Jacobs and Christopher Kane. Following the footsteps of Emma Watson and Kate Moss, she is the new face of Burberry, and has also appeared in campaigns for cult Swedish label Acne and Topshop.

Lennox said she is extremely close to her mother. "I talk to my mum every day - she loves hearing about my adventures and often is more excited than I am about what I am doing, it's great she is my No. 1 fan," she said.

However, when she started in the fashion world, she also made a point of not actually using her real name. "That's why doing well in the show season is so important to me, because people don't know who you are," she said. "Any model who has walked in a fashion week would tell you it is hard work - six weeks of intense work. But I always tell myself to do the best that I can do and stay true to who I am."

Lennox is also a strong advocate of manners. Clad in a feminine, vintage-inspired chiffon dress of blue and yellow floral patterns, she is softly spoken with a wealthy London accent. And she maintains constant eye contact while talking.

Lennox attended Spanish fashion brand Mango's latest autumn/winter 2011 fashion show in Paris on May 17. She will be featured in the high-street label's autumn/ winter campaign as its new global ambassadress following movie stars Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.

She talked to Shanghai Daily in Paris about her personal style, favorite shopping places, her multi-faceted personality and future plans.

Q: When did you decide to become a model?

A: It was not really a plan for me. I've always been very interested in and inspired by fashion since I was really young. I used to want to be a fashion designer. I started as a part-time model when I was around 16, but soon realized that modeling requires a lot of time. So I've been modeling full-time for about a year now, and it's been a really great experience so far.

Q: What is your first fashion memory?

A: The Spice Girls maybe (laugh). I remember I once made a New Year's resolution to design new outfits for the Spice Girls every single day of the year. I used to be obsessed with anything pink and sparkly when I was really young, about six.

Q: Do you have any style icons?

A: I don't really like to follow one person's style. I kind of like to get inspired from different people, even someone on the street. Or it doesn't have to be a character - it can be an attitude, an era ... something that inspires you and gets you interested.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: My style changes a lot. I'd say pretty eclectic. I like to wear a lot of vintage clothes. It really depends ... sometimes I like to wear some really chic French outfits, but in summer I prefer to wear Bohemian clothes.

I like to keep it well mixed by adding something quirky into the look, like a hat, a different jacket or something vintage.

Q: Where do you usually go shopping?

A: Anywhere. I go to a lot of vintage fairs. In London, there are huge vintage fairs, I spend hours and hours there. I travel a lot so I stop at different kinds of shops. But I also have staples, such as great high-street stores like Mango and Topshop. I don't really buy expensive clothes.

When I was in New York, there was a woman selling second-hand clothes opposite my apartment. My god, I got five amazing jackets for only five dollars!

Q: Are there any fashion items that you are obsessed with?

A: Hats. I take my mum's hats all the time. And good vintage dresses.

Q: What is your favorite part of yourself?

A: I've never really thought about it. I like my hands, I guess, because I like to paint. I often draw and write backstage or on planes flying from job to job. And I like my lips because I talk a lot.

Being a model is a bizarre thing since you are always being looked at, and it requests you to "transform" from time to time. So I try not to care too much about how I look ... and I think character means more than looks.

Q: So how would you describe your character?

A: I think everyone is multi-faceted. Like I said, I talk a lot, I'm socially active, but I also enjoy being alone some time. I am my own best friend.

Q: How do you like working with Spanish brand Mango this time?

A: It's a big privilege. I grew up in Spain when I was a child so I know the country quite well - and Spanish fashion style. It is easy and relaxed, but at the same time elegant and feminine.

Q: A lot of models want to go into acting or music, do you? Especially music.

A: I'm interested in loads of different things. I really enjoy doing art. I love sketching, so maybe I could build bridges to that from modeling. I'm also interested in acting. Everything to me is like an adventure - so who knows what will come?
