The latest in chic, sexy lingerie for those cold winter night
THE Grand Palais in Paris was turned into a huge playground this week for the launch of the latest Sonia Rykiel pour H&M collection of lingerie and accessories.
The collection hits 1,500 H&M stores worldwide today, as well as eight major Sonia Rykiel boutiques.
The collection is "sophisticated, stylish and sensual," according to Nathalie Rykiel, president and artistic director of Sonia Rykiel,
The extravagant party (Tuesday night, Paris time) at the Grand Palais was all about dream and fantasy. More than 2,000 guests walked through an enchanted "forest" of giant mushrooms, trees (leaves made of violent, pink and black balloons) and rabbits, all swathed in pink mist.
They entered a playground with a carousel swing, ferris wheel, mirror palace, fishing pond, cafes and bars, complete with a glittering recreation of the Eiffel Tower and a smaller-sized Arc de Triomphe featuring Sonia Rykiel's signature stripes. It was a sparkling, surreal theme park for the adults.
"We wanted to give our guests a story-like experience, let them enter a fantasy world where they could let themselves go," Nathalie Rykiel says.
An iconic Parisian brand, Sonia Rykiel was created by Nathalie's mother, Sonia Rykiel, in 1968. It is most famous for its knitwear and signature multi-stripes.
Led by British top model Lily Cole, models displayed the collection at a float parade emerging from the mimic Arc de Triomphe, in a fun, carefree style, with a Parisian fun fair as backdrop.
Lily Cole held the reins of a giant moving horse head wearing a bustier and matched high-waisted brief. There was also a 1920s inspired black tuxedo jacket in velvet with chiffon lining and belt to be worn with black velvet pants or transparent silk ones. Silk chiffon separates include camisoles, night slips, nightgowns and kimono-style peignoirs.
The color schemes focus on pale pink, black and multi-stripes in harmonies of old rose, violet and black. There are also bras, strings and night slips featuring Rykiel's signature stripes. Details include silk floral motifs and "belle en Rykiel" written in rhinestones.
Apart from the lingerie, there is an array of accessories including slippers, rhinestone brooches, hair bands as well as a velvet pillow.
Nathalie Rykiel says that she doesn't look for inspirations from a movie or a book but designs "in a realistic way."
"Being a woman makes you aware of other women," she says. "When I design, I come up with things I haven't seen before or haven't found yet. I love being creative and creating exceptional things.
"Lingerie is a treat for yourself, something that you wear for your own pleasure," she adds. "With this collection, the house's signature chic and seduction is available for all women. It will be a great gift to celebrate the end of 2009, which has been a tough year for many."
Margareta van den Bosch, H&M's creative advisor, agrees: "The lingerie collection is really the perfect Christmas gift. It was such a thrill to work with a fashion icon like Sonia Rykiel. We are really happy with the collections, which we feel is 100 percent Sonia Rykiel."
Celebrity designer Jean Paul Gaultier was at the party. "Sonia Rykiel is like a revolution in fashion," he says. "She makes sexy clothes, but ones that are very modern, cool and feminine. She's super-clever and super-talented and I have big, big admiration for her."
The "Reine du Tricot" (Queen of Knits) will release a second collection featuring an knitwear collection for women and girls, as well as playful accessories in February 2010, to be sold in 200 selective H&M stores around the world.
Bold, colorful and fun, the capsule collection brings together the hallmarks of the brand and its deeply Parisian spirit, from multi-stripes and rhinestones to the little black dress.
It will also be H&M's first guest designer collaboration that includes children's clothes.
