Watchmaker first

Patek Philippe officially opened its Patek Philippe Institute Shanghai as the first training institute of its kind located outside the watchmaker’s Geneva workshops. Located at its 900-square-meter Shanghai Service Center in Yifeng Galleria on the Bund, the Patek Philippe Institute Shanghai is the embodiment of the watchmaker’s commitment to lifelong service and restoration for all timepieces. The institute was started by Laurent Cantin, international customer service director. He said from 2009 to 2013, the number of customer service cases grew by nearly 50 percent at both Shanghai and Beijing service centers so they are determined to recruit and train local watchmakers to best serve customers in China. During a strict recruitment process that took a month, eight apprentices, four men and four women, passed tests and were accepted. The curriculum is a two-year program each apprentice will need to complete a total of 3,500 hours of courses consisting of watchmaking theory and practice, as well as English.
