Brazil - Rainforest in trouble
CLEARING the Amazon rainforest appears to be increasing because of uncertainty over implementing a new forestry conservation code.
On Wednesday, President Dilma Rousseff called implementation "one of the great challenges for the country," and revealed that deforestation is increasing. As a first step, the law requires registration of more than 5 million farms and ranches to demarcate cropland from protected terrain.
Regulators, landowners and farmers say they don't know how long it will take to enact the complicated new law that governs the amount of woodland that must be preserved on farms and other productive property.
