Chengdu - Ink wash ‘renovator’ in show

Modifying traditional ink-wash painting can be difficult because of the absence of vivid colors, layers and textures in the ancient genre. Lu Chuntao, a “renovator” of ink-wash painting, following his solo exhibition in Singapore and Italy, is having a one-man show titled “The Moonlight over the Lotus Pond” at the Blue Roof Museum of Chengdu through January 5.

The exhibition features his new ink-wash paintings and ceramics.

Lu says he “found himself” a few years ago and now produces works with a wilder, explosive power. He commonly introduces a single color in a work, or big blocks of color across rice paper. His paintings suggest the texture and color blocks often found in oils. He paints vast fields of dark, or regular rows of dark flowers against a dark backdrop, as though the lotus is from another time in history or another planet.

“I want to pursue striking visual effects,” he said. “It’s easier said than done. But it’s inevitable if we really want to be different from our predecessors.” Lu uses “a different eye” to see natural surroundings.

He uses abrupt geometric shapes and big blocks of color to separate a subject from its surroundings — a challenge to the traditional aesthetic taste. His paintings reflect a sensibility that has opened to a wider natural world, an environment far broader than a limited private space.

“My work is more like a short poem narrating a soliloquy from my heart as if it has discovered a musical rhythm that beats among these still points, lines and planes,” he said.
