China - Abacus on heritage list
The United Nations cultural organization has added the traditional use of the Chinese abacus or zhusuan to its cultural heritage list on Thursday as it announced that it had 25 new entries on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage list at a meeting in Azerbaijan.
China’s zhusuan, known as the oldest “computer” in the world, has a history of more than 1,800 years.
“The Chinese zhusuan is a time-honored traditional method of performing mathematical calculations with an abacus. The addition indicates that zhusuan still has an advantage over the computer even in modern society,” said Zhu Jinxiu, deputy director of the Chinese Zhusuan Association.
