China鈥檚 modern Madonnas
RENAISSANCE iconography transported to modern China provides inspiration for an exhibition by Chinese photographer Gao Yuan at the Studio Marangoni Foundation in Florence, Italy, through March 6.
Taking depictions of The Madonna with Child by famous Italian painters as a starting point, in “12 moons,” Gao portrays a series of young Chinese mothers as brave and independent women living in an environment of hurtling economic development.
Gao, from Taiwan, is much-traveled and currently divides her time between Beijing and New York.
Informed by her international background in China, Japan and the US, Gao explores cultural identity and the multiple layers of society through the symbols and iconography of everything from classic paintings through to graffiti art and even tattoos.
Her work is featured at the Hong Kong Sotheby’s 2012 auction, and has been collected by the Kaohsiung Museum of fine arts in Taiwan.
