Comic opera in all its finery
ABOUT 100 costumes; wigs, hats and props; reproductions of archival documents; extracts from productions and documentaries are on display at the The National Center of Costume and Scenography in Moulins, France.
The exhibition called “The Opera Comique and its Treasures” unveils some of its oldest costumes in its 14 exhibition rooms, some of which have never yet been shown to the public.
To balance this, the Opera Comique will present the know-how of its workshops and the most brilliant productions of its recent seasons, directed since 2007 by Jerome Deschamps. Visitors will be able to discover a highly original art of costume and the repertoire as well as the characters and artists who made its history, with the help of accessories, archieves, videos and news reports.
This event, held outside Paris through May 25, emphasizes the fact that the Opera Comique repertoire was mostly performed in the provinces for a long time. It was open to regional cultures and most welcoming to artists trained throughout France.
