Grand Canal opera proves a splash hit with audiences
CHINESE opera “The Grand Canal” was staged at the Argentina Theater on last Sunday and Monday and greeted with enthusiasm by Rome audiences.
Sponsored by China National Arts Fund, the opera takes as its subject the story of the Grand Canal, created under the Sui (AD 581–618) and Tang (AD 618–90, 705–907) dynasties between the 6th and 7th centuries.
Opera goers praised the performance, with its striking dance and songs and eye-catching costumes.
“I liked the scenery and costumes most, they were very impressive,” Aristotele Porceddu said.
“The story is also interesting,” the opera-loving student added.
“The narrative about this big canal created to connect China’s distant regions could symbolize a country trying today to both reach out both to the world and bring its own different areas and people closer,” said Porceddu.
Brought to the stage by the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group, the opera was also sponsored by the Mission of China to the European Union, the Chinese embassies in Belgium and in Italy and the government of Jiangsu.
The Rome shows were followed by more performances in Milan.
