Japanese duo turns sci-fi novel into opera

TO turn the science fiction classic “Solaris” into an opera, Japanese composer Dai Fujikura and choreographer Saburo Teshigawara set out to create for the audience a world of strangeness.

“Solaris,” whose world premiere took place on Thursday at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, is based on the celebrated novel of Polish writer Stanislas Lem about a planet covered entirely by ocean.

The novel, a philosophical exploration on human intelligence and its limitations, has inspired numerous adaptations including a cult film by Russian Andrei Tarkovsky and, more recently, by US director Steven Soderbergh.

“I’ve been drawn to this story for years,” said Fujikura, a 37-year-old rising figure in avant-garde classical music. “I don’t think it’s science fiction; it’s a great story about the alienness which is deep within every human being,”
