Local ballet troupe performs in Canada
SHANGHAI Ballet recently toured to Ottawa, Canada from November 10 to 14. The ballet troupe established in 1979 staged the classic ballet “Giselle” at the National Arts Centre and the original ballet “The Butterfly Lovers” at the Chinese-Canadian Heritage Centre.
The three performances of “Giselle” were also the closing show of the 2015-16 China-Canada Year of People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges, starring Shanghai Ballet first principal dancer Wu Husheng and principal dancer Qi Bingxue. Principal dancer Zhang Wenjun and soloist Meng Fanyu also made their debuts in the lead roles in “Giselle” as Albrecht the Duke of Silesia Hilarion and Giselle the peasant girl.
“The Butterfly Lovers” is an original four-act ballet created and premiered by Shanghai Ballet in 2001. It was choreographed by Xin Lili and written by Luo Huaizhen. The story is adapted from the Chinese classic romance of the same name.
