Manchevski’s first China show
MACEDONIAN filmmaker, photographer and artist Milcho Manchevski recently unveiled his first China exhibition “Dreaming a Wu Yan Poem,” or the five-character poem, which is the third part of Poet-Artist Exhibition series.
Manchevski is renowned for his film “Before the Rain,” which has won 30 awards internationally including the Golden Lion at the 1994 Venice Film Festival. It also won an Academy Award nomination. He appeared in Shanghai last week for his exhibition during the sidelines of 2017 Shanghai International Film Festival, of which he was invited to be a member of the jury.
Wu Yan poem, or five-character poem, was a category of traditional Chinese poetry that prevailed in Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). Each verse has five characters that are interlaced with rhythms and variegated sentences. They coincide with the essence of Manchevski’s works in this exhibition.
“Is reality the starting point of art?” Manchevski asks in the exhibition, which reflects on the definition of art, triggering an inner conversation from the actual existence of both “created” and “consumed” in the art works into dreamlike happiness, misery and conflict.
The exhibition features 12 groups of photographs and texts. His montage techniques and agile capturing merges both dimensions of time and space within the images. The show runs through July 26 at Xinhua Center.
