Nanjing - Horses gallop at museum
To celebrate the coming new Year of the Horse, Nanjing Museum is staging a special exhibition of various artworks and painting scrolls featuring horses.
Among all the exhibits, the most striking one is a Chinese painting collection of eight horses by Ignatius Sickeltart (1708-45), who took the Chinese name Ai Qimeng and worked as a royal painter in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) court of the emperor Qianlong.
His horse collection, each the size of a real horse, vividly depicts eight stallions of rare breed that were sent to the royal court as tributes. These paintings can be taken individually or as a compelling whole.
Other treasured pieces on show include paintings by Chinese artist Xu Beihong, famed for depicting galloping, sturdy horses in bold brushwork. There are also horse-themed artworks in bronze, carved wood, jade and pottery among others, all from the collection of Nanjing Museum.
“Galloping Horses” explores the meaning and role of horse culture against the backdrop of upcoming Year of the Horse. It runs through May.
