New year, new regulations
No smoking on board
Smokers on high-speed rail lines will face a fine of 500-2,000 yuan (US$82-330) and may be detained. Detention can range from five to 10 days, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said.
No food on Metro
Eating and drinking are banned on Shanghai Metro lines, but there are no laws or penalties and violations are widespread. Lawmakers dropped plans to incorporate bans into the official Metro regulations for lack of overwhelming public support.
Fines for ticket cheats
Metro fare evaders will be fined five times the ticket price after they pay for a replacement ticket.
Safety seats for kids
Starting in March, children under 12 years old are not allowed to sit in the front seat of cars and those under four must wear child safety belts.
Online verdicts
In an effort to improve judicial transparency, China’s top court said all the judgments will be posted online in five years, beginning this year. Personal information will be redacted to protect privacy and legitimate rights.
Tax cuts
Milk powder and mobile phones are among more than 760 imported products that will enjoy the same tax ratio as those of all the products from most-favored nations.
Overseas assets
Chinese citizens must declare their overseas financial assets and loans starting this year, according to the State Council.
